Making The Local Motorway Network Safer

There is an acknowledged and significant need for a new Motorway Service Area (MSA) at M1 Junction 35, to serve this section of the Motorway Network.

The M1 Motorway is one of the busiest Motorways in England, which carries some 115,000 vehicles a day through South Yorkshire.

Journey times between existing MSAs at M1 Woodall, M1 Woolley Edge, M18 Doncaster North and A1M Blyth are already significantly in excess of the agreed safe maximum travelling time of 30 minutes. Further exacerbating this problem, this section of the M1 is one of the top ten most congested sections of Motorway in the UK, with the least reliable journey times. The imminent installation of the Highways England’s ‘Smart (Managed Motorways) Scheme’ will significantly improve journey time reliability, but will reduce average speeds, further increasing journey time between existing MSAs. Sheffield Services will provide all road users with a much needed rest area.
